Mayans believed it necessary to at least once in their lifetime make the difficult
journey across open sea to the ancient city of San Gervasio on the island of Cozumel, home and sanctuary
of ‘Ixchel’, the Mayan goddess of childbirth, fertility and medicine.
San Gervasio experienced an unusually long history, inhabited by Mayans from 300 B.C. until the
16th century. If you are interested in undertanding Mayan culture, you must visit San Gervasio at least
once in your lifetime also. Protected as a National Park, it is now home also to a variety of
jungle wildlife. Keep your eyes out especially for the large colorful iguanas that now inhabit
the ruins, sunning themselves on the ancient roads called ‘sacbes’, pronounced ‘sock-bays’.
On this tour you will be picked up at your hotel or the pier where your ship arrives and be taken to
the ruins of San Gervasio in an air-conditioned vehicle. After touring the ruins with a
professionally licensed guide, you will have a sightseeing ride around the island with a stop on the
windward side for a beautiful view high above the Caribbean Sea. Then it’s on to Palancar Beach
for 2 1/2 hours of free time. There you can swim or just relax, take in the sun and enjoy a lunch
and tropical refreshment. Food and drinks at the beach are not included. You will then be taken back
to your ship or hotel.
